Norrhavet · Advertising agency

An advertising agency does not sell space — it sells an idea that holds across every channel.

An advertising agency produces the idea, the concept and the craft: what is said, how it looks and how it adapts per channel. Within Norrhavet, concept and channel execution sit with Ellary and film production with Fenny, so idea and production do not have to pass through two separate suppliers.

Definition

What an advertising agency does.

An advertising agency works from position to production: what the brand should stand for, which message carries it, which creative idea makes the message memorable, and how that idea is expressed in film, image, copy and per-channel formats. The remit normally ends at finished material. What it is not: buying ad space (media agency), building the website (web agency) or running ongoing channel publishing (marketing agency) — even when one group can cover several of those roles.

Boundaries

Advertising, media and web agency — three different responsibilities.

The advertising agency owns the idea and the creative material. The media agency owns budget allocation across channels and the purchase of space. The web agency owns the destinations traffic lands on. Many failed campaigns are not caused by weak creative but by those three not talking: a strong film pointing at a landing page that does not exist produces nothing, however good the film is.

How it runs

Four steps from brief to material in channel.

One: brief and scope — who should be reached, what should happen and what can be measured. Two: concept — one idea stated in a single sentence, tested against the message before anything is produced. Three: production — film, image and copy in the formats channels actually require, not one master file cropped afterwards. Four: follow-up — the outcome against the baseline, and what to redo.

Measurement

Reach is not a result.

Impressions and reach describe how much was bought, not what the advertising did. Three things can be followed up: the change in direct and branded searches during and after the period, the number of inbound enquiries attributed to the campaign, and cost per qualified conversation. The agency should state the baseline for all three before production starts.

Next

Bring the brief — you get an idea back, not a quote template.

Describe the audience, what should happen and when. We come back with how the concept would look, what production it requires and how the outcome would be measured.

Frequently asked

Advertising agency — common questions.

What does an advertising agency do?+

It develops position, message, creative concept and finished material — film, image and copy — adapted per channel. The remit normally ends at delivered material.

What is the difference between an advertising agency and a media agency?+

The advertising agency creates the idea and the material. The media agency plans and buys the space where the material runs. Both can sit in one group but they are different disciplines.

How does an advertising assignment run?+

Brief and scope, concept, production in channel-native formats, and follow-up against the baseline. The concept step should be approved before production begins.

Is the film produced in-house?+

Yes. Fenny is the film studio within Norrhavet and produces moving image, which keeps concept and production together without an external handover.

How do you measure whether advertising worked?+

Through the change in branded and direct searches, the number of enquiries attributed to the campaign, and cost per qualified conversation — against a baseline set before the start.

Agency or in-house creative?+

An in-house creative keeps pace on the everyday work; an agency brings concept work and production capacity at peaks. The arrangement that usually works is an internal brand owner plus an agency for concept and production.
